The first installment of a series of action car games, in which various vehicles equipped with weapons are engaged in deadly battles on large maps. Released on PS1, the title stands out from the competitive Twisted Metal thanks to the stylistics chosen by the creators, referring to the 1970s. This is a debut game by the American Luxoflux studio, which later became famous, among others, with the True Crime series.
Story
United States, 1970s. As a result of the fuel crisis, the country is on the verge of collapse. It is becoming more and more difficult for the authorities to keep order and stop the waves of protests. Meanwhile, the powerful OMAR consortium plans to take advantage of the situation in order to get rid of all competition and control the entire fuel market. To this end, it hires a group of drivers to terrorise the south-western states and ensure the collapse of other companies. Against mercenaries there is a group called Vigilantes, trying to prevent chaos.
Mechanics
Vigilante 8 is an arcade production in which players sit behind the wheel of a selected, weapon equipped vehicle and take part in skirmishes on various types of maps. The camera presents the action from the perspective of a third person. The creators of PS1 have put at their disposal several types of vehicles, including tugboats, muscle-cars, buggies, pick-ups and military terrain. The skirmishes take place on maps maintained in various scenery, from a city full of casinos, through a factory, a huge dam and airport, to the Grand Canyon. On each of them there are unique items that can be used to damage enemies, as well as boxes with weapons to collect. Among the available types of weapons are self-guiding rockets, flame thrower or mines.

Game modes
Vigilante 8 allows you to play in each of the available modes alone or with another player on a split screen - both competing and cooperating with each other. The Arcade option lets you select any board and set the number of opponents to quickly start playing.
Technical issues
The distinguishing feature of Luxoflux production is its design at first glance. Vigilante 8 refers to the seventies of the last century with projects of characters, cars and soundtrack.
